Expand the following for a list of the Metalnaguage used in previous lessons. Althing: A meeting of all freemen in Iceland (also the name of the modern Icelandic parliament). Artefact: An object made by a human being, typically one of cultural or historical interest. Bias: A prejudiced view on someone or something. Danelaw: The northern, central, and eastern region of Anglo-Saxon England colonized by invading Danish armies in the late 9th century. Exploration: The action of exploring an unfamiliar area. Freemen (Jarls): The upper echelon of those who were considered free in Norse society ie nobles, wealthy landowners, merchants and traders. Freemen (Karls): The main population in Norse society i.e. people who were free to own land, build property and start a family or business. Homelands: A person's or a people's native land. Honour: High respect; great esteem. Kings: Regional rulers (there was not one King for all Vikings but multiple Kings for different regions). Latitude: Distance from the equator, measured in degrees. Horizontal lines on a globe. Lawspeaker: A respected member of society who could memorise and recall laws, because laws were not written down. Longhouse: Typical Viking dwelling. Longship: A long, narrow warship, powered by both oar and sail with many rowers, used by the Vikings and other ancient northern European peoples. Medieval warming: Warming of the European climate circa 950CE-1250CE. Norman: A member of a people of mixed Frankish and Scandinavian origin who settled in Normandy from about AD 912 and became a dominant military power in western Europe and the Mediterranean in the 11th century. Norse: The Norwegian language, especially in an ancient or medieval form, or the Scandinavian language group. Pagan: Ancient religions or beliefs that pre-date Christianity in this part of the world. Patriarchy: Society controlled by men. Punishments: The infliction or imposition of a penalty as retribution for an offence. Raid: A rapid surprise attack to commit a crime, especially to steal from premises. Runic alphabet: The name given to the Norse alphabet. Sagas: A long story of heroic achievement, especially a medieval prose narrative in Old Norse or Old Icelandic. Scandinavia: Region in northern Europe including Norway, Sweden, Denmark and sometimes Finland and Iceland. Settlement: A place, typically one which has previously been uninhabited, where people establish a community. Shipbuilding: The design and construction of ships. Society: The aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. Stereotype: An over-generalized or fixed belief about a particular category of people. Thing: A formal assembly of freemen to resolve disputes.
